Job Summary:
- The Pathologist’s Assistant provides services in Anatomic Pathology as part of a multidisciplinary team under the direction and supervision of a qualified Pathologist.
- This role assists in the preparation and performance of human post-mortem and surgical pathology examinations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in the preparation and performance of human surgical specimen examinations, including gross description, complete dissection, and selection/submission of tissue sections for microscopic examination (frozen and permanent sections for light, electron, and fluorescent microscopy).
- Accession specimens and ensure proper identification in accordance with surgical pathology policies, including Rejection/Rehabilitation Policy.
- Prepare specimen containers and tissue cassettes.
- Support resident training and credentialing by providing technical instruction and teaching in accordance with practice guidelines and the surgical pathology dissection manual.
- Assess residents’ competency in specimen handling.
- Perform gross photography of specimens as needed and maintain files.
- Grossing all sections of surgical specimens, biopsies, and complex cases.
- Assessing specimens and submitting them to surgical pathology.
- Conduct tumor procurement for biorepository purposes, including documentation, quality assurance indicators, and related business transactions.
- Assist with departmental quality assurance and quality control programs, with primary responsibility for specimen identification, frozen sections, and maintenance of instruments and refrigerators.
- Maintain inventory for the frozen section room and surgical pathology lab (E & R-6), submit supply orders, and restock as needed.
- Select gross tissue and extremities for disposal following report finalization.
- Perform autopsies, including external examination, in situ organ inspection, evisceration, dissection, submission of tissue sections, and dictation or recording of findings.
- Perform other related duties as assigned or as time permits.
Required Education:
- Bachelor of Science degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
Required Certifications & Licensure:
- Successful completion of a NAACLS-accredited Pathologist’s Assistant program.
- PA (ASCP) certification.
- Prior certification by the American Association of Pathologist’s Assistants (AAPA).
Required Skills and Experience:
- 5 years of minimum experience required.
